What is NextLevel Exchange?

NextLevel Exchange (NLE) is a Chicago-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps small business owners grow through mentorship, educational programming, networking, and increased access to social and financial capital. Our mission is to connect entrepreneurs with the relationships, knowledge, and resources they need to build stronger businesses.

 

Who is eligible to participate in NextLevel Exchange?

Our mentorship program is designed for established small business owners who are committed to growing their businesses. While exceptions may be made on occasion, applicants should generally:

• Have been in business for at least two years

• Generate at least $25,000 in annual revenue

• Be a full-time business owner (or demonstrate a clear plan to transition to full-time in the near future)

• Operate a business located in or serving the Chicago region

• Be committed to actively participating in the 12-month mentorship program, including monthly meetings with a mentor and program surveys

 

Who does NextLevel Exchange serve?

NextLevel Exchange was founded through a collaboration among three leading Chicago business support organizations (BSOs): the Chicago Urban League, Sunshine Enterprises, and the Women's Business Development Center (WBDC). These organizations continue to play an important role in identifying and supporting entrepreneurs through our mentorship program.

In addition to referrals from our BSO partners, NextLevel Exchange also welcomes applications from eligible small business owners throughout the Chicago region. Entrepreneurs do not need to be affiliated with one of our partner organizations to apply.

 

Is there a cost to participate?

No. Participation in the NLE mentorship program and many educational events is offered at no cost thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and supporters.

 

How long is the mentorship program?

The mentorship program is a structured, 12-month experience that pairs entrepreneurs with experienced business leaders for monthly one-on-one mentoring. We encourage mentorships to continue beyond the 12-month mark.

 

Who are NLE mentors?

Our mentors are experienced executives, entrepreneurs, and business leaders who volunteer their time to help entrepreneurs navigate challenges and accelerate growth.

About Events

Can I attend NLE educational programs if I'm not currently in the mentorship program?

All educational programs are open to all NLE mentees and alumni, while others also welcome prospective participants or community partners. We always welcome inquiries on attending our programming.

Are virtual sessions recorded?

Generally, no. NLE prioritizes the candor of our business owners and wants participants to feel comfortable speaking freely during our sessions. As a result, most sessions are not recorded.

About Capital Readiness

What does "capital ready" mean?

Being capital ready means your business is prepared to pursue outside financing. This includes having a clear understanding of your business model, financial performance, growth strategy, funding needs, and the documentation typically required by lenders or investors. Because increasing access to capital is a core focus of NextLevel Exchange, we provide educational programming, mentorship, and resources designed to help entrepreneurs strengthen their capital readiness and pursue financing with confidence.  

 

What is the Capital Readiness Pitch Competition?

The Annual NLE Capital Readiness Pitch Competition is designed for entrepreneurs who are actively preparing to pursue capital. Participants receive educational programming, pitch training, mentorship, and the opportunity to present to a panel of lenders and capital providers.

 

Who can participate in the competition?

The competition is open to eligible active NLE mentees and graduated alumni who demonstrate an appropriate level of capital readiness and intend to pursue capital.

 

 

Does NLE provide loans or investments?

No. NLE is not a lender or investment fund. We help entrepreneurs prepare for capital and connect with organizations that provide financing.

 

About Mentorship

How are mentors matched with mentees?

Matches are based on business needs, industry experience, expertise, and growth goals.

 

How often do mentors and mentees meet?

Mentors and mentees are expected to meet at least once per month throughout the mentorship program.

 

Can I stay in touch with my mentor after the program?

Absolutely. Many mentor-mentee relationships continue long after the formal program concludes.

How do I apply for the mentorship program?

Applications are accepted during designated enrollment periods. Information about upcoming cohorts is posted on our website and shared through our communications.

 

Can alumni continue participating in NLE programs?

Yes. Graduated alumni are encouraged to continue participating in many NLE educational programs, networking events, and capital readiness opportunities.
